"Blackwater Falls", created by the artist, Charlotte Catlett Gerlach, from sketches and many photographs
on location, as a commissioned oil painting, for a private collector, in Harrison County, West Virginia.
Blackwater Falls; what a magnificent place ~ a little bit of heaven for an artist with an eye for color and
design and a strong desire to paint this challenging scene. Several trips were made to the falls in order to
gather reference material, find the right season, right light, enough water, etc., and the best view. "I want the
viewer to feel a sense of peace and calm when viewing my painting, to feel as though he or she can actually
hear the water roaring over the five stories high falls onto the rocks below, feel the cool breeze blowing
through the trees, smell the forest aromas and hear the songbirds singing," said Charlotte.
Blackwater Falls, Blackwater State Park, near Davis, WV in the scenic, Potomac Highlands area of West
Virginia. The "black" water is a result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles.
